Lyons Consulting Group Playing Hardball in the Chicago Recruiting Challenge

Chicago. The Windy City.  Second City. Chi-Town. The Queen of the Lake. Chicago has been called many things, but lately, employers are taking note of the challenge in technical recruiting.


Somehow, while unemployment levels are high around the nation, according to the Illinois Technology Association, Illinois ranks #6 in the nation with the biggest gap between open technology positions and qualified talent.  Illinois, specifically Chicago, has numerous top-ranking universities for technology, yet the talent isn’t staying loyal to the Windy City.


There are several guesses as to why Chicago is losing their technical talent. Some blame it on the weather while some blame it on Groupon (the fastest growing technical company in Chicago) taking all of the talent. My guess: Technology is simply booming and Chicago is a much younger tech hub vs cities like San Francisco. However, take note San Fran: Chicago, specifically lyonscg, is learning how to play hardball when it comes to competing for top talent.


For me, and probably 99.9% of Americans, Chicago isn’t a difficult sell. We are the home of the Bears, Cubs, White Sox, Fire, Blackhawks, the Willis Tower, the best beachfront in the Midwest, summer festivals almost every weekend, the Magnificent Mile, and have over 30 million people visiting every year.  I could go on and on how much I love this city. So much to do and so much to see. Plus, Chicago people are SUPER friendly.
